Board of Supervisors Approves Off Leash Pilot at Quarry Park
On April 5, 2022 the Board of Supervisors for San Mateo County approved the off leash dog pilot at Quarry Park.
Board of Supervisors Off Leash Pilot
After the Planning commission refused the permit for both parks, citing misinformation about the environmental sensitivity of Pillar Point Bluff and ignoring the thorough environmental review and protections included in the study, San Mateo County Parks came up with a revised version that included only Quarry Park.
There was no real discussion after the presentation by Nicholas Calderon, head of parks. Only five members of the public spoke. A vote was quickly taken and again the Board of Supervisors approved the pilot with only Carol Groome dissenting. Again. She gave no reason for her dissention.
This decision is a victory for dog owners and great credit goes to Christine Corwin (the creator of Coastside Dog who put countless hours working on this pilot as part of the Dog Work Group), Chris Johnson (another member of the dog work group whose contributions cannot be overstated), the rest of the Dog Work group, County Parks (a big shout out to Nicholas Calderon) and every member of the dog loving Coastside who sent emails, begged others to send emails, went to meetings, spoke at meetings and endured endless challenges and frustrations trying to make this pilot program a reality.
You readers were responsible for the overwhelming public support for the pilot project and even though Pillar Point Bluff will have to wait for another day, you should feel pride in what you have accomplished.
The first legal off leash area in San Mateo County Parks!
No appeals are anticipated and will update this page when details about implementation of the pilot are known.
We look forward to working with County Parks to make this pilot a success and look forward to other park areas made available for responsible dog recreation, both on and off leash.
